As reported in the Lancet journal, all confirmed patients were children under 8. There were also 26 children up to the age of 10 years.
It is called tomato flu or tomato fever because it is characterized by symptoms of blisters or red color on the skin's surface. This viral infection is also accompanied by joint pain and fever.
"As we are struggling with the emergence of the fourth wave of COVID-19, a new virus called Tomato Flu or tomato fever has spread in India in Kerala in children under 5 years of age," the report states.
"This rare viral infection exists in endemic areas and is not believed to be life-threatening; however, due to the horrific experience with the COVID-19 pandemic, vigilance management is needed to prevent further outbreaks," the researchers advised.
So far, the infection has been found in the Kollam district of Indian Kerala and near the Anchal, Aryankavu, and Neduvathur areas. Children are at high risk because of the virus that causes it spreads through close contact.
Doctors say that until now, no specific medicine can treat tomato flu. This virus is highly contagious and resembles Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease.
