Do Natural Antibiotics Really Work?
Some plant extracts, essential oils, and even foods have antibiotic
properties. For example, particular food and plant extractions can prevent the
growth of bacteria in food.
From time to time, these properties extend beyond food and
can help in your health care. Cranberry extract contains antibacterial and
antioxidant compounds, making it a home remedy against urinary tract infections
(UTIs).
Herbs can also be antibiotics. A small sampling study of 58
Chinese plants found that 23 had antibacterial properties and 15 had antifungal
properties.
A spring 2014 study has found that herbal therapy is as
effective as a chemical antibiotic in treating a bacterial waste disorder of
the small intestine.
Read on to learn more about five popular antibiotics you can
try at home.
1: Honey
Honey, one of the oldest known antibiotics, was noted among
the ancients. Egyptians often use honey with antibiotics, and the skin is
natural.
Honey contains hydrogen peroxide, which can develop some of
its antibacterial properties. It is also high in sugar, which can help prevent
the growth of any bacteria.
Added honey to a low pH level. These works remove bacteria
from the moisture in the flax so that the bacteria can dehydrate and die.
You can also swallow honey to help treat internal
infections. Just a spoon to eat or mix the whole herbs in a hot cup of tea for
a relaxing treat.
It is generally safe to use honey on your skin or body. However,
you should never give it to a younger 1-year-old baby. But consult your doctor
if appropriate.
2: Garlic extract
Garlic has long been considered to have antimicrobial
properties. A 2011 study is conducive to finding garlic's effects against
bacteria. You can buy garlic strain or extract at a health food store. You can
also do this by crushing the cloves of garlic in olive oil.
Garlic is generally safe to swallow, but in high doses, it
could cause internal bleeding. Up to two cloves per day is considered an
acceptable dosage. If you are taking a garlic supplement, be sure to follow the
dosage directions provided.
If you are taking blood-thinning medications, consult your
doctor before using garlic as an antibiotic. Garlic can be great to expand the
effects of this drug when taken.
You can also apply garlic directly to the wound or stain.
3: Myrrh extract
Myrrh is well known, but its noxious force to repel germs is
not so widely known.
Researchers in 2000 studies have concluded that myrrh
extract can kill several pathogens daily. This includes:
- E. coli
- Staphylococcus aureus
- Pseudomonas aeruginosa
- candida albicans
Myrrh is generally well-tolerated, but ingestion can cause
diarrhea. If you apply myrrh to the skin, you may experience a slight rash.
Myrrh, when consumed in large doses, can cause heart problems.
Myrrh is typically prepackaged, so be sure to follow the
dosing instructions on the label.
4: Thyme essential oil
Many home cleaners use natural thyme essential oil. This oil
is beneficial against antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
Thyme essential oil is for external use only. You shouldn't
take thyme oil by mouth. Before applying to the affected area, be sure to
dilute the essential oil with a carrier oil in equal parts. Common carrier oils
include coconut and olive oils.
Applying undiluted essential oil to the skin can cause
inflammation and irritation.
People with high blood pressure or hyperthyroid problems
should not use thyme essential oil.
5: Oregano essential oil
Carvacrol is an ingredient in marjoram essential oil. It has
exceptional therapeutic properties that can further promote inhalation healing
in the body. Seaweed oil has been found to cure stomach ulcers and reduce
inflammation.
To treat yeast infection on the skin, add a drop of marjoram
essential oil to a teaspoon of carrier oil, such as olive oil or coconut oil.
Apply the mixture to the affected area.
You can also spray marjoram oil into the air to help clear
sinus infections. Never use marjoram essential oil or essential oil on clean
skin.
