Herbs as a Covid-19 Treatment Supplement

Specific drugs for  Covid-19 are currently undiscovered.   Many parties carry various studies to find a  powerful medicine to kill this new coronavirus, including herbal ingredients.

Then, what is the position of herbal or traditional medicine to ward off the coronavirus and the treatment of Covid-19 patients?  Pulmonary    Consultant,  dr.  Ika  Trisnawati,M.Sc., Sp.PD,  K-P.,  mentioned that herbal remedies are supporting supplements in treating diseases, including  Covid-19.

"The addition of herbal components becomes one of the treatment modalities including for  Covid-19,"  he said in the talk show  Synergy  Science-Clinic  In  Pandemic" Lesson LearnFrom  Handling  Covid-19  organized by the Faculty of  Pharmacy UGM    online Wednesday (8/7).

He exemplifies the use of herbal remedies in support of disease treatment because the virus has been done. One of them is the use of  VCO  in support of standard therapy in HIV patients.  VCO  containing lauric acid that can strengthen the immune system has been tested with results that show benefits in aiding standard treatment in HIV patients.

"In treating viral diseases such as  HIV, hepatitis and others add herbal components in one treatment modalities.   This can also be a modality supplement for the treatment of  Covid-19,  so herbs as an adjuvant," he explained.

The same thing was also conveyed by the  Professor of Faculty of  Pharmacy  UGM, Prof. Dr. Suwijiyo  Pramono, Apt. This herbal expert mentions that herbal or traditional medicine is not antiviral. Herbs become a  source of vitamins and minerals that can increase endurance.   Serves as an immunostimulant,  antioxidant, as well as immunomodulator.

"Herbal medicine is used as a standard drug support therapy to help patients heal," he explained.

He mentioned many herbal remedies that have been empirically used by the public and have gone through various tests as immunostimulants. Some of them are herbs with the chemical content of ginger,  turmeric,  ginger,  meniran,  sambiloto,  guava fruit,  noni fruit,  aloe leaf gel,   preparations herbs, and topical and inhalation ingredients eucalyptus.

Pramono said there are many challenges in testing herbs as a drug,  including  Covid-19. First, there must be empirical data on the use of herbal ingredients.  Furthermore,  it is necessary to go through several long testing processes ranging from antiviral testing via docking, in vitro,  pharmacokinetics in vivo to on top clinical trials.   Optimizing immunostimulating effects through extract tracing,   fraction to active isolated in vitro and in vivo, and preparing for clinical trials.

"Optimization of the effects o the eradication of  Covid-19  symptoms is mainly mucolytic and bronchospamolytic. Then, clinical trials on top with a protocol how to make wise cosmetics   (CPKB),"  he explained.

On that occasion, he also mentioned eucalyptus necklaces the treatment of  Covid-19. The use of eucalyptus in the form of chains for medical devices, according to him, could potentially help the healing process of  Covid-19 patients.    Even so,  the use in the form of chains must be clinically tested.

The talkshow also invited    UGM microbiologist Prof. Dr. Widya  Asmara, SU., Ph.D., who conveyed the development of the Covid-19  vaccine. He explained the various possible vaccine development to prevent  Covid-19, such as vaccines' development through attenuated viruses,  vaccine sub-units, DNA and RNA material-based genetic vaccines,    viral vector vaccines, and others.

"Actually, the easiest to develop a  vaccine from the virus that is activated,  but the obstacle to Covid-19  is there are difficulties when multiplying viruses or cultures,"  he explained.
