Prostate Cancer
Prostate cancer is a type of cancer-prone to attack men due
to abnormal cell growth in the prostate gland. This cancer is included in the
category of cancer that is difficult to detect because it does not show early
symptoms. This cancer can spread to nearby organs, such as the bladder, bones,
and other organs, if left untreated.
Medical treatment for prostate cancer depends on several
factors, such as how quickly cancer grows and spreads and the patient's overall
health. In addition to medical treatment, some people choose the herbal
treatment as another alternative to restore prostate health. It should be
understood that treatment with natural ingredients is not one hundred percent heal
but can be considered an option.
1. Pygeum
Launching from Medical News Today, pygeum, a type of
evergreen tree that thrives in the mountainous regions of sub-Saharan Africa,
has been shown to contain a variety of fatty acids, alcohols, and sterols that
have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects on the urogenital tract.
The study titled Complementary and Alternative Medications
for Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia uploaded by Semantic Scholar shows that taking
between 100 and 200 mg of pygeum extract daily or splitting it into two doses,
i.e., 50 mg twice a day, can help reduce prostate cancer symptoms.
2. Saw Palmetto
Saw Palmetto is a herbal medicine of a coconut plant native
to the southeastern United States, often processed into herbal supplements to
treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). A research article entitled Nutrition
and Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia revealed that this plant supplement could
reduce BPH symptoms by inhibiting testosterone production and reducing the size
of the inner layer of the prostate.
3. Orbig is speciosa
Orbignya speciosa or babassu is a species of palm tree
native to Brazil. As quoted from Medical News Today, some indigenous Brazilian
tribes and communities use dried babassu seeds or babassu nuts to treat
urogenital symptoms and conditions.
According to a study published in the US National Library of
Medicine National Institutes of Health, babassu nut oil also inhibits
testosterone production. In contrast, other nut parts contain compounds with
anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
4. Pumpkin Seeds
Pumpkin seeds which have the Latin name Cucurbita pepo,
contain beta-sitosterol, a compound similar to cholesterol. Studies in
Nutrition and Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia also show that beta-sitosterol
increases urine flow and reduces the amount of urine remaining in the bladder
after urination. To reduce BPH symptoms, people with it are recommended to
consume 10 grams of pumpkin seed extract every day.
5. Lycopene
Lycopene is a natural pigment found in many fruits and
vegetables. This natural pigment also helps slow the progression of BPH.
Tomatoes are a type of vegetable with a relatively high source of lycopene.
Usually, the darker the pink or red color of the fruit or vegetable, the higher
the lycopene content.
6. Zinc
Zinc may help reduce urinary symptoms associated with an
enlarged prostate. Chronic zinc deficiency has been shown to increase the
likelihood of developing BPH potentially.
Therefore, taking zinc supplements or increasing dietary
zinc intake can reduce urinary symptoms of an enlarged prostate. Zinc is found
in poultry, seafood, some grains, and legumes, such as sesame and pumpkin.
